Choose one place in the text of “Preface” or “The New Civil Rights” where Yoshino uses a quote. Write a TRQAC paragraph in which you discuss why Yoshino choose to quote here and how he integrates the quote into his text. Your quote of Yoshino introducing and quoting will be Q for your paragraph.
In the article, The New Civil Rights by Kenji Yoshino, throughout the article, he inserts many quotes into the reading. Towards the beginning of the reading he discusses True Self and False Self a lot. He talks about how people tend to hide their False Self behind their True Self. Yoshino includes a quote from one of his female colleagues talking about how she doesn’t like the way he is helping people. On page 544 she says, “Your commitment is to help people ‘be themselves’—to resist demands to conform that take away their ability to be the individuals they are. But the covering idea could perpetuate the stereotypes you want to eliminate. One way minorities break stereotypes is by acting against them. If every time they do so, people will think they are ‘covering’ some essential stereotypical identity, the stereotypes will never go away”. I think that Yoshino chose to integrate this quote into the article because he wanted to show us that his intentions weren’t to make it seem like people who fit into the mainstream aren’t always covering, it could just be who they are, which I think makes the quote significant. By Yoshino putting this quote into his article, he showed us that everyone males mistakes and used it to his advantage. This connects to the True Self and False Self because the quote mentions that just because people have a trait that connect them to the False Self, it doesn’t mean that they are not being their True Self.
