In the article “Why Your Brain Hates Other People”, Robert Sapolsky highlights the issues between the “us” and the “them”. “Us” and “Them” is a group that humans use to categorize people. They can group them based on gender, religion, ethnicity, etc. Unfortunately, it is mostly used to discriminate against other people. People in the “us” group are typically more favored and accepted because they are all alike. Anyone who is not like the people in the “us” group are put into the “them” group. Which means that they don’t fit in with the “us” group, so they’re put into the “them” group. This kind of thinking is bad because it is wrong. Personally, I think discriminating people based on their gender, race, sexuality or whatever is so wrong. This causes people to become closed minded and prejudice when there is not a need for it. If there was no classification of an “us” or the “them” groups, we most likely would not have so many problems like we do today. In Adichie’s TED Talk, she discussed her roommate from college. As soon as her roommate had found out that she was from Nigeria, she had a sense of pity for her because she thought that if you were from Africa, you must have had a bad life or something. She created an “us” and a “them” for people that live in Africa because she thought that no one in Africa could ever be like her.
