Nursing Module Reflections 3 & 4

Knowledge and priority setting

The third nursing module was about knowledge and clinical judgement. Throughout the module it talked about learning style and critical judgement. Knowing your own personal learning style is very important when you are a student. If you know your own learning style, you are better able to learn what is being shown to you. I personally, and a visual and tactile learner. Pictures and diagrams really help me to understand topics better. Also, hand on is very helpful for me. So when I am in lab or clinical, doing all those hands on activities helps me to have a better understanding of what I am doing. This module also discusses critical thinking, which is another important aspect of nursing. Having critical thinking and good judgement can help you, a nurse, in situations that do not always go as planned. It can help you to come up with other ways to solve the problem that you are facing and provide your patient with better care.

The fourth nursing module discusses priority setting. As a nurse, knowing how to set priorities is so important. You will always have a lot of patients during your shift, and you need to assess which patients need your care first, and which ones can wait a little bit longer before you can get to them. When trying to decide your priorities, you can look back as Mazlow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This is a good way to tell what patient needs your care first. Another way to set priorities is based off of the ABC’s (airway, breathing and circulation). If a patient has something wrong with their airway, they are going to need priority over someone who has Peripheral Vascular Disease, who does not have good circulation to their extremities.

Good work Lexi; keep in mind that understanding the various learning styles will help you to better identify how to teach your patients given their own learning styles.
