If a natural or man-made disaster occurs, the nurse plays an important role during these times. When a disaster occurs, the nurse’s primary responsibility is assisting the victims. It is important that they know how to tag people, as the tags that they receive indicates how urgent that they need care. The nurse is also responsible for providing as much first ais as they can, such as wrapping up wounds that may be found on the victims. When referring to the ANA code of ethics, I think that Provision 2 and 5 are both very important. Even though the nurse’s primary role is to care for patients and to be compassionate, if the nurse does not care for themselves and provide adequate self-care, then they will not be in the right state of mind and provide care to the best of their ability. So, I think that it is important for the nurse to follow Provision 5 in order for them to be able to help the patients that have unfortunately been affected by these disasters.
