After completing this interview, I learned that leadership in nursing can come in many different ways. This is something that I knew before, but did not think that much of a school nurse having a leadership role. This proved me wrong. As a school nurse, you are responsible for the health and well-being of tons of children and adolescents. If a child gets hurt or does not feel good, they are sent to the nurse and the nurse is then responsible for determining what to do next for them. School nurses also provide the children with routine hearing and vision screenings that are important for their development and can identify any problems that the child may be experiencing. I would say that this both surprised me and reinforced my knowledge about the role because when she said that is what they are responsible for, I remembered just how much responsibility that they have during a school day. I was also surprised when she said that she also deals with the problems that children face at home too and how it affects them while they are in school. I did not know that school nurses did this. It makes sense to me now that I learned that they do.
I definitely think that I have a newfound respect for school nurses and especially the one that I interviewed for this assignment. They are single handedly one of the most important members of the staff at schools. I did not know all of the tasks that this nurse had to do on a daily basis and she gained a lot of my respect and admiration for all that she does. I will use the information that I gained from this interview in my future nursing career in many ways, one being that having conversations with anyone and learning their background is essential in order to treat any kind of patient, no matter their age, properly.
My best friend is a school nurse and during the pandemic I have decided that school nursing is one of the toughest jobs, part public health champion, part rule setter and enforcer.
